Coordinated funding model
Funding for Diamond Open Access remains a challenge, as it depends on fragmented and often short-term institutional contributions rather than stable, long-term funding structures. Because DOA does not charge publication fees, it has no direct source of income, making it difficult for scholar-led and non-profit journals to sustain their operations and grow over time.
The CoDOA-CH initiative (Creating a Sustainable Funding Scheme for Diamond Open Access through Institutional Collaboration in Switzerland) brings together Swiss research institutions to develop a coordinated national funding model. Its goal is to establish a sustainable, long-term consortial approach to support high-quality Diamond Open Access journals and ensure more reliable and equitable funding across the system.
Apply for funding
The initiative is in its pilot phase, during which journal editors can apply for funding. Eligible journals will be pre-selected by the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries. In the subsequent implementation phase, participating institutions will decide which journals to financially support. Funding will then be allocated accordingly.
To ensure effectiveness and long-term impact, the funding model will be regularly evaluated and adjusted as needed.
